Pumpkin Pie Spice can be easily found in any supermarket especially now we are in pumpkin season! However, this blend of 5 spices is very simple to make yourself at home and there’s a chance you already have most of the ingredients at hand!

This warming spice can be used in a variety of recipes and makes a perfect addition to pumpkin spice lattes, soups, curries and pies. Apart from the legendary flavour, pumpkin pie spice has numerous health benefits listed on the bottom of this post.



To find out how long you can keep the spice in your cupboard, check the expiry dates of the ingredients. Usually, you can use the spices for around 4 years but if you’re anything like me you’ll use the whole jar in one season.



INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tbs ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp grounf nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Mix all the spices together.
  2. Store in a dry place.
  3. Enjoy in your favourite dishes!


Cinnamon

Cinnamon contains an essential compound – Cinnamaldehyde – which has powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also an effective anti-oxidant that helps prevent cell damage and chronic diseases. It’s been proven to fight bacterias, viruses and fungus occurring in foods.


Ginger

Thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, Ginger has been used to fight cold and flu and protects us from viruses and infections. In fact, you can use ginger to relieve muscle pain and improving cognitive functions. It’s also an effective cure for indigestion and nausea.


Cloves

Cloves contain eugenol – a compound that acts as a natural antiseptic and is used to relieve pain, inflammation and improve wound healing. What’s more, you can use it to effectively relieve tooth pain. Cloves are also highly anti-bacterial which is why you will find them in mouthwash and toothpastes.


Allspice

Allspice includes high iron content which stimulates better oxygen distribution in your body and consequently boosts your energy levels. Thanks to many minerals it contains it’s great for metabolism and gut health. In addition, its manganese content makes it effective in strengthening bones.


Nutmeg

Nutmeg is rich in minerals that help regulate blood pressure and circulation. Additionally, it has calming properties making it effective for stress relief and treating insomnia. It’s a great supplement for weight loss as it helps your body get rid of toxins and boosts metabolism.
