Suspension Trainer Buying Guide
Suspension trainers work by leveraging gravity and your body weight, allowing you to perform a countless number of exercises and workouts. Suspension trainers can be used by people of all ages and fitness levels, and are great for building muscular balance, joint stability, mobility, and core strength helping you perform better in any sport. It also improves posture and prevents injuries.
This equipment also allows you to easily increase or decrease the resistance and intensity of your workout by simply adjusting your body position. By using your own body weight, the suspension trainer delivers greater performance and functionality compared to large expensive exercise machines.
Due to their light and compact design, suspension trainers can be taken virtually anywhere. You can use them at the gym, at home, or even outside.
Suspension training offers many health benefits. One of the main health benefits is that it can help to build core strength. This is because suspension trainers are intentionally designed to be unstable, as your body changes position during the exercises, your centre of gravity is shifted, forcing you to activate your core muscles to stabilise, balance, and coordinate your body. As well as improving core strength, suspension training helps to improve balance, improve co-ordination, and increase muscular endurance.
Suspension trainers are also used by professional and amateur athletes to improve their functional strength for specific movements such as golf swings.
Mounts & Anchor Points
There are many different types of anchor points and mounts for suspension trainers. Some suspension trainers come with a mount as part of the package. However, this is not always the case. Therefore it is important to know the different types of mounts and anchor points and what circumstances you would use them in, to select the mount that is best suited to your needs:
Door Anchor - A door anchor slips over the top of your door, and when shut, it will offer sturdy support for your suspension trainer. This type of anchor is usually made of high-density foam to protect your door from scratches. If you are looking to train indoors with your suspension trainer then this is a good option for you, as a door anchor is easily stored when not in use and is also potable.
Xmount - The Xmount is a small and sturdy piece of equipment which provides an easy anchor point for any suspension trainer. These are usually made of high quality steel that can easily attach to any wall, vertical stud or secure overhead beam. The great thing about an Xmount is its versatility, it can be used indoors or outdoors. However, it is not portable like a door anchor.
Invizi-Mount - The Invizi-Mount, created by the brand TRX, is both a picture hanger and a suspension trainer mount. Simply install the mount to a load-bearing wall, hook your suspension trainer to the mount, complete your workout, then quickly disconnect your suspension trainer and cover up the Invizi-Mount with a picture frame. This mount is perfect for seamlessly morphing your workout space back into your living room, bedroom or office.
Commercial mounts - At powerhouse, we sell two different commercial mounts for suspension training, the TRX MultiMount and the TRX S-Frame. The TRX MultiMount is ideal for small group training, it also maximises space savings and provides room for pull-ups. The TRX S-Frame is ideal for large group training, they come in sizes from 5 to 30 feet, and also provide customisation options, such as hammer bars and dip bars.
If you are looking to train outdoors then consider strapping your suspension trainer to anything from goal posts, chain link fences, trees, posts or poles.
When purchasing a suspension trainer it is important to check the length of the straps if you want to attach your suspension trainer to a high anchor point or thick vertical anchor point. Some brands also offer the option to purchase an extender for your straps which can offer extra length.
Quality is also fundamental when purchasing any suspension trainer, a high quality suspension trainer will be durable, but even more importantly, it will be safe. An easy way to check quality is by checking reviews on the product and brand.
Look for high quality, ergonomic, padded handles when purchasing a suspension trainer, this will help to increase comfort when training.
