Cross Trainers are also known as elliptical trainers and over recent years have proven very popular. They offer the same cardio benefits as treadmills but are low impact. They are reasonably simply to use and work both the upper and lower body simultaneously.
When buying a cross trainer, there are a number of considerations:
•Have you used a cross trainer before (say at a gym or used a friends cross trainer) and what features did you particularly like or dislike?
•Consider how much you will be using the machine for and what you hope to gain. If you plan to use occasionally to maintain fitness levels or new to home fitness, may be you don’t need such a high specification machine. If you are planning to use around 5 times a week, consider a German made machine.
•Read on to learn about these features. View the benefits of extended motion technology (or visit www.extendedmotion.tv) :
•Where is the cross trainer going to be used? The size will vary slightly but it is worth measuring before your purchase to ensure it will fit prior to purchase. Most of our cross trainers measure around 145 x 53 x 160cm. We do not advise that you use or store any KETTLER cross trainers in a room which is not centrally heated (such as a garage or conservatory) where the temperature fluctuates causing condensation inside the computer and circuit board. The location can also influence whether you buy a battery powered machine or a cross trainer requiring a mains connection. Battery powered cross trainers are usually more basic as they do not require much power. All KETTLER cross trainers are mains powered.
•How much do you weigh – there are weight limits to our cross trainers which vary slightly. The majority have a maximum weight limit of 150kg but see individual products for exact limits.
•The majority of KETTLER Cross trainers are rear driven meaning that the flywheel is at the back of the machine and benefits from being fitted with long foot plates and you can position yourself to suit but we are introducing more front driven machines.
•There are different types of resistance – magnetic and induction. The magnetic resistance uses magnets to move to and from the flywheel (the closer the magnets are to the flywheel, the more resistance) whereas the induction resistance uses electro magnets by changing the voltage at small increments also known as an induction brake system) which is much more sophisticated and found in the higher specification machines (usually £700+). The number of stages resistance indicate the range of resistance so the more levels, the better the machine. However, level 1 on cross trainer A will vary with the same level on cross trainer B. Ergometer cross trainers don’t measure resistance in stages but in watts meaning it is calibrated and therefore extremely precise. Resistance levels are changed via a manual tension knob usually on the frame or via the computer. Basic models will use the manual adjustment and the more sophisticated machines will change the resistance via the computer ).
•Stride length – there are 2 different stride lengths available. The extended motion technology has an extended stride length of 480mm and has a much more flatter natural stride. View the benefits of extended motion technology on www.extendedmotion.tv.
•Please bear in mind that crosstrainers are mechanical items with moving parts and therefore require regular maintenance.
•KETTLER crosstrainers come with a 3 year parts and labour warranty (conditions apply) and are designed for home usage.
•All KETTLER crosstrainers require self-assembly.
