You've made the initial step, coming to Powerhouse Fitness, but where do you go from here? With over 2,000 products on our website you'd be forgiven for thinking the amount of choice can be overwhelming, but that's where we step in to help. Despite the huge array of fitness equipment on offer, it's important to narrow your choices down to what it is you actually want to do and take it from there. For example, if you know you're looking to get in shape for a 10K, then the obvious choice is a treadmill, but with nearly 100 treadmills on offer at Powerhouse Fitness it's just as important to have a price range in mind, and perhaps even a list of features you'd like the treadmill to provide, which is where the next section will come in handy.
How to find what you're looking for
All our departments are arranged in a line of tabs towards the top of every page. They start at Cardio, and include Strength, Accessories and Nutrition. You can click on any of these tabs to bring up that particular department, but if you hover over the tabs you'll see that most offer a sub-menu which will take you to a sub-category. For example, hover over Cardio and you'll see Treadmills, Exercise Bikes and so on. If it's a treadmill you're looking for, then click Treadmills and you'll be directed straight to the Treadmill section.
From here, you'll see an option to 'Narrow Your Search' on the left of the page, and a series of links that refine the selection in the main part of the screen. Again, following our example of looking for a treadmill, if you know that the treadmill you want has to have both hand grips and Polar chest strap heart rate measurement, you can click 'Hand grips and receiver' from the 'Heart Rate Measurement' menu. The number next to the link in brackets shows how many products will remain after you have narrowed the search. Once clicked, you can then specific a price bracket. If you know you want to spend between £2,000 and £3,000 pound, select the corresponding link in the 'Narrow Your Search' box, and you can continue filtering results like this until you're left with a specific few models.
Click through the remaining products, read through the descriptions provided, browse the images and then study the 'Product Specification' tab towards the bottom of the product screen. This will give you detailed information about the product to ensure it meets your exact needs.
Fitness equipment Fitness equipment and gym equipment is constantly evolving, and the latest home cardio products feature cutting-edge visual consoles just like those you'll find in a gym. These computers provide a wide array of feedback as you work out, and can include (depending on the product) your pace, your heart rate, the calories consumed and so on. The best consoles stimulate the user with motivational messages and some even retain your personal information ready for your next routine, giving long-term goals and results.
Naturally, the more expensive products tend to offer the better consoles, but you'll find the essential information displayed on even the beginner products. Most of our product pages will give precise console functionality in the 'Product Specification' tab and where available there's a close-up image of the console itself shown underneath the main product image.
When selecting your product from our website, pay attention to the type of display on the console and whether it offers the exact feedback you need. If you have any questions on product consoles, please call our dedicated sales line on 0800 212729 from 9am-9pm who will be more than happy to assist you with your choice.
When people think of cardiovascular, they think of treadmills. Treadmills are hugely popular because they require little expert knowledge before use and can provide great results - and of course recreate the experience of running outside without the risk of the British weather. They can also be used for rehabilitation, offering a relaxed and controlled walking pace if required, and of course the more expensive treadmills can really push the fittest of runners, too.
Using a treadmill is a great way to stay in shape but, investing in the right treadmill can be a daunting task. At Powerhouse Fitness we have a team of experts to help you make the right decision. Treadmills come in both a folding option, for those restricted on space and non-folding for those with room to spare. Our motorized treadmills come with speed and incline adjustments and can be the perfect investment for a home or a commercial gym. Running is an excellent form of exercise, but jogging on hard surfaces i.e concrete can prove very damaging to the joints. A treadmill offers the same exercise but with the belt cushioning, reduces the impact on the joints considerably. Fitness goals can easily be monitored using the treadmill's programs and feedback that is displayed on the consoles.
The best treadmills provide a solid but cushioned running deck, high powered, smooth motors and a console with plenty of feedback. Look out for models with motorised incline levels and a good choice of speeds too - inclines can make a huge difference to the amount of effort required and if the console offers programs you'll find that the incline angle plays as much a part of the built-in programs as the speed does. Programs can range from fat burning to intervals, and if the treadmill comes with heart rate measurement can often tailor the program to your heart rate.
Elliptical trainers, sometimes called Crosstrainers, are a great way to condition your whole body. They're low impact, so there's less stress on your joints, and with the arms and legs working together they can burn more calories in less time than other cardio equipment. Elliptical trainers tend to be smooth and quiet and offer a wide range of resistance levels to tweak your workout. As with other cardio equipment, the better models carry the better consoles, so look out for heart rate measurement, calorie and pace counting and a decent selection of programs to choose from.
Elliptical trainers require little practice to get the most out of them, and are great for overall fitness.
An Elliptical Cross trainer offers a very similar cardiovascular exercise to a treadmill but with lower impact. When using an Elliptical Cross trainer your arms and legs work independently from each which requires you to use your core muscles creating a full body workout. Our Elliptical Cross Trainers range from a compact home use product to a fully commercial piece.
Exercise bikes are a great way to improve your stamina and increase your lower body fitness. Upright bikes are the type most are familiar with, but you can also buy recumbent bikes from Powerhouse Fitness which have the seat lower to the ground with the pedals more towards the front of the machine, offering a less stressful workout and better back support, great for those who might suffer from back or knee problems.
Exercise bikes tend to require little tuition before use, and the natural 'riding a bike' feel to them means that users often couple their exercise bike workout with other activities, such as reading a book or watching television. When shopping for an exercise bike on Powerhouse Fitness, be sure to select from those offering the superior consoles as detailed information on your speed, time and distance combined with calories burnt provide great motivation when starting out. Bear in mind that the better models feature adjustable seat, handlebars and pedals.
Rowing is a great way to improve your upper body fitness, and Powerhouse offer a wide range of rowing machines that are tailored to all abilities. Rowing machines, by their nature, remove the stress of impact that a treadmill might have and concentrate solely on moving the limbs and joints smoothly, providing benefit to the back in the form of increased suppleness and posture, and equally as good for the torso and the arms and legs.
Rowers vary in price quite widely because of the resistance method employed with particular models, and the consoles tend to be less featured than they might in other cardio equipment, but even the basic models feedback your rowing rate and energy. The simple rule of rowing is the more you put in, the more you'll get out, so be prepared to work hard but see great results.
Powerhouse Fitness recommends you consult a doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you are pregnant or suffer from a heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma.
