Company Overview

Established in 1980, Powerhouse has steadily expanded to become one of the leading UK’s independent suppliers of fitness equipment.

Powerhouse employs approximately 80 permanent staff, with a specially trained commercial account team of 12 staff. Turnover was £10,000,000 / $US 20,000,000 for 2005/6 and is now the leading UK retail specialists in fitness, with eleven retail stores throughout Britain. Powerhouse is the UK’s number one Internet specialist in the supply of fitness equipment throughout the UK.

A Brief History

Powerhouse is the trading name of Laidir Leisure Ltd - Private Limited Company Reg No. SC71827 founded in 1980 by David Webster Snr OBE. The word "Laidir" is Scottish Gaelic for "Strength". The Company maintains its focus on the sale and service of fitness products. In the early years, the company focused on the sale of commercial products to sports clubs and gyms. In 1987, Powerhouse Fitness launched their first Fitness store in Argyle Street, Glasgow. Powerhouse now operates from 12 locations across the UK, including 11 retail stores, a telesales division, on-line website and B2B division. By June 2007, turnover reached £10.2million GBP, ($20million USD), with a payroll in excess of 80 staff. Also in June 2007, the company moved to their new 56000 square foot headquarters and distribution centre in Clydebank.

A Brief Biography of our Founder

David P. Webster is a world renowned historian on Weightlifting, Strength Sports and Highland Games, and has been involved in the industry since the 1940’s. He is author of over 40 books, still holds world records in Strand Pulling and received the OBE for services to sport from Her Majesty the Queen at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace in 1995.

3 Divisions

Powerhouse operates 3 Divisions: Retail Sales Division, Commercial Sales Division (B2B) & Logistics and Service Division. We supply high-quality exercise equipment and fitness products as well as wide range of sports nutrition under our 'Sportfood' brand. Not only do we provide a vast selection of exercise products and workout equipment, we also supply a huge range of brands and types of exercise machines. Our selection includes larger exercise equipment products, such as rowing machines, treadmills, running machines, exercise bikes, cross trainers and elliptical trainers. Amongst these products you’ll recognise well-known brand names, from Beny and Reebok to York and LifeFitness. We also supply a lot of smaller fitness products and accessories, from exercise mats to heart rate monitors, including body fat monitors and weights, barbells, dumbells, pulse monitors and more. We also supply an extensive range of boxing equipment. From boxing gloves to punch bags, guards and protection, speedballs and boots. Our hollistic approach to fitness also means that our SportFoods division provides all the nutritional supplements you could need whilst training. You can buy everything you need to workout, whether in the gym or at home, within our online and high street stores.

As well as providing fitness products and exercise equipment online, we also have stores throughout the UK from London to Aberdeen. Powerhouse Retail

The Powerhouse Fitness Retail Division is a rapidly expanding "Bricks 'n Clicks" success story that combines all the benefits of the real-life high street shopping experience with the very best in On-line retailing. The Retail Division has grown from humble beginnings in a small store in the West end of Glasgow to 11 branches nationwide, ranging from a concession in Selfridges in London's Oxford Street, London Battersea, London Charing X Underground Station, Chessington in Surrey, Nottingham, Batley (nr Leeds), Newcastle, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and 2 in Glasgow - plus a family of web sites as well as their Direct Telesales Department located at head office.

Commercial Sales (B2B)

Powerhouse has over 25 years' experience in the supply of fitness equipment to the commercial fitness industry. In December 1999 Powerhouse launched a new Premium Brand of quality British-made resistance equipment and is a main distributor of Johnson Commercial Cardiovascular products in the UK. In January 2003 Powerhouse launched the stunning new range of Matrix Cardiovascular and Strength Products. Powerhouse are exclusive distributors of Matrix products in Scotland.

Powerhouse commercial division offers the total solution for your club or fitness suite. Please ask about the extensive range of finance options, client support systems, membership sales packages, audio video equipment, and building/decoration works. Over the 25 year history of Powerhouse, projects range from the supply of individual machines to large design, build and marketing projects such as the £425,000 conversion of a local authority Leisure Centre café/bar into an 80 station hi-tech fitness suite with a 10 week sales campaign securing over 750 members.

Powerhouse Commercial Division regularly tenders for large projects. Two of the more significant contracts won include East Riding of Yorkshire Council and and Highland Council. For both Councils, Powerhouse is the exclusive supplier of fitness equipment over the five year duration of each contract.

Although we regularly win large contracts of these types, Powerhouse also cater for all market sectors and are equally placed to win small orders of single units to the larger contracts. Given the width of our product portfolio, Powerhouse is unique in the UK Fitness Industry. We are the only company that can provide fitness accessories, fitness equipment or sportsfood for all market sectors regardless if you are a beginner purchasing home equipment, an elite athlete, hotel, school, university, or large corporate chains, we have the products and expertise to deliver what you require.

Operation and Logistics Division

The whole Powerhouse Operation is supported by a substantial Operations and Logistics department. The department has a team 9, and is based at our new 56,000 sq. ft. Head Office and Distribution Centre in Clydebank. The Operations and Logistics Department has an annual budget exceeding £400,000 making it the best-resourced operations team in the Scottish Health & Fitness Industry.
